Drake Maye has continued to progress with each and every start for the New England Patriots. And while the growth hasn’t translated to wins, the quarterback provides plenty of optimism for the future at the position.
Offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt has worked with Maye all season, but the rookie quarterback was asked specifically about his relationship with senior offensive assistant Ben McAdoo during his weekly appearance on WEEI.
“Can’t forget about B-Mac. B-Mac’s been great. I think he’s been a great voice and he’s been a head coach to great players — Eli Manning, and (Alex Van Pelt and McAdoo) were with (Aaron) Rodgers,” Maye said. “So he had a bunch of great film of them back in the day with certain footwork and offering little things and little tidbits throughout the week that B-Mac helps (with). And he helps kind of game plan the third down, and he really kind of shows us what they do on third down. And we try to take what he what he shows us, and try to scheme up the best deal for that.

“And helps, kind of, game plan the third down, and really kind of shows us what they do on third down. And we try to take what he shows us, and try to scheme up the best deal for that,” he continued. “So he’s been great. You know, B-Mac’s also been in there in the quarterback room and can’t forget about B-Mac. He’s very knowledgeable, and I’ve seen a lot of different things and a lot of different footwork, a lot of different concepts, and his coverages and great ideas. So, it kind of just all kind of has their roles and kind of bounce off each other’s ideas.”
McAdoo was hired by the Patriots in the offseason and spent a lot of time with Maye training camp, along with quarterbacks coach T.C. McCartney.
MassLive’s Mark Daniels recently dove into McAdoo’s role with the team, given it was such a mystery throughout the season. He wasn’t required to speak to the media, which only continued the mystery of his role to build.
Here’s an excerpt from Daniels’ story:
In the quarterback meeting room, McAdoo made it a point to show Drake Maye the amount of pressure the Rams defense puts on quarterbacks, repeating one of his favorite phrases: “Stare the barrel down.”
This season, McAdoo has multiple roles. With the offense, he goes over the third-down game plan and how it will attack the next opponent. When with the quarterback position group, he’s an observer while T.C. McCartney runs the meeting.
McAdoo picks his spots. With Maye last week, he hammered home to he importance of staying in the pocket, even when the blitz is coming, and then throwing the ball.
While things haven’t gone well for the Patriots, it’s clear McAdoo has the respect of Maye and the two work well together. McAdoo has a slew of experience and clearly has been beneficial in Maye’s development.
