Drag performance sparks community strife in Central Mass. town

Residents of Sutton are divided over a workshop hosted at Sutton Memorial High School in March that featured a drag artist.

The workshop, “don’t be a drag, be a queen,” was part of the school’s annual Connections Conference, a student-run event held every March that celebrates the traditions and histories of diverse communities. According to Sutton Memorial High School Principal Ted McCarthy and Interim Superintendent Caitlin Paget, the workshop featured a two-minute dance and lip-sync of a song from the soundtrack of the movie “Mean Girls” as well as a conversation detailing how drag artists have been part of the history of the LGBTQIA+ community.
