Dolphins coach raves about Drake Maye ahead of game vs. Patriots

Drake Maye has drawn rave reviews from those around the league including Kurt Warner, Rob Gronkowski and even longtime Patriots rival Rex Ryan.

And now the rookie quarterback can add Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel to the ever-growing list of those who like what they see from the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

“I saw a true quarterback who has the ability to gain the confidence of his teammates and lead and orchestrate an offense. I saw a guy that can make plays in a multitude of ways. … He’s a guy that can see down the field, can play fearlessly in the pocket, and make every throw with the arm strength to do it,” McDaniel told reporters Wednesday. “But, then also is a very good athlete that has some juice and can make plays off schedule. I think that’s been a huge bonus to their offense as of late. They’ve had some explosive plays, whether he threw it outside the pocket or scrambled outside the pocket. He’s a guy that you expect to continue to get better.”

Maye has shown impressive development since taking over as New England’s starting quarterback in Week 6. The Patriots are still just 3-8 and will likely miss the playoffs for a third straight season, but Maye has provided plenty of optimism for the future of the franchise.

McDaniel, whose Dolphins host New England in Week 12, credited the Patriots coaching staff for how they’ve been able to prepare Maye for the NFL in his rookie season, noting it’s impressive when a quarterback in their first year can “make plays at the NFL level.”

“There’s a lot coming at them, they just learned the foreign language a handful of months ago and are doing it in live action with guys that are trying to inflict pain on you,” McDaniel said.

Maye has been doing and saying all of the right things since being drafted by the Patriots. And it’s clear he has the respect of his teammates.

In a trying season for the Patriots, the rookie has provided a boost to the offense and has shown he can be the future at the quarterback position.
