While the Brimfield Flea Market draws in tens of thousands of human visitors for its antiques, there are many furry-friends who tag along to the shows with their companions too.
Some shoppers bring their canines for the walk, while dealers traveling from out of state bring them along for the long-haul. Either way, dog sightings are one of the few things you can almost always count on seeing at the market.
Despite high temperatures upwards of 90 degrees Fahrenheit and an ongoing heat advisory visitors, dealers and furry-friends tagging along were beating the heat and making their rounds on opening day.
MassLive kept our eyes peeled for furry friends who made the trek around Brimfield Flea Market fair grounds on day one of the July 2024 showing and found a handful of dogs helping their companions “sniff out” a good deal at the summer showing.

Meet the dogs:
Lola
Lola is a rescue dog who made her way to Brimfield alongside her owner, Dorris Dixon, of Pennsylvania. Lola is a Brimfield Flea Market regular in her own right as she attends all three markets in Brimfield throughout the year. Dixon rescued Lola over six years ago in Loretto, California while Lola was pregnant. Today, Dixon travels with Lola and two of her daughters.
Mariposa
Mariposa is a six year-old mutt who made her way to the market from Pennsylvania. She traveled to Brimfield with her owner, Dorris Dixon, and is the daughter of Lola. Dixon said she named her Mariposa as it means butterfly in Spanish. When she was just a pup, Dixon brought Mariposa and her littermates to the market where Dixon gave two littermates to dealers in the field she knew and trusted would take good care of them, adding the Brimfield Flea Market community has become “like a family” after 26 years.
Footsie
Footsie is a one and a half year-old boy who also made his way to the Brimfield Flea Market from Pennsylvania alongside Lola and Mariposa. He is the only boy out of the bunch of four furry-friend travelers.
Birdie
Birdie is a terrier mix who made their way to the flea market all the way from Chicago. Birdie flew in from Chicago with their owner — traveling an estimated 919 miles, according to Google Maps.
Ziggy Stardust
Ziggy Stardust is somewhat of a local, traveling to Brimfield from Westbrook, Conn. Though still traveling from in New England, Ziggy saw about an hour and a half commute from Westbrook to the market. The three year-old pup visited the market on opening day.
Gustafa
OK … well, we know this isn’t a dog.
But this little birdie flew all the way in from Florida Keys, Florida — and for traveling that distance alone, he should be on our list! Gustafa is a two year-old parakeet who made the trip to Brimfield with his owner Tuba Oguz. Gustafa is spending his days hanging out with Oguz as she sells Turkish imports at the market.
