Does outcome of Week 8 impact what Patriots will do at trade deadline?

The NFL trade deadline is fast approaching and it will be interesting to see what the Patriots decide to do. At 2-5, many believe New England should sell and start preparing for 2024. On the flip side, if the Pats upset the Miami Dolphins the way they did the Buffalo Bills last weekend, it’s worth wondering if they’ll buy in hopes of making a playoff push.

On the latest episode of “Eye On Foxborough,” MassLive Patriots reporters Mark Daniels and Chris Mason preview the Week 8 matchup and discuss whether the outcome will impact how New England approaches the Oct. 31 trade deadline.

Mason believes New England should be on to 2024 even if it comes out of Miami victorious because it’s still an uphill battle for the Patriots to overcome their ugly start.

“Ultimately I think they should still sell no matter what. Even if they win in Miami they’re 3-5. I don’t see it happening this year,” Mason said. “I think they need to start planning for the future. So I would start selling pieces either way.”

Daniels the outcome of Sunday’s game will determine how Bill Belichick and company handle Oct. 31.

“I feel like if they win on Sunday, it makes it less likely that they will sell off trade pieces. I wouldn’t be surprised if they were to upset the Bills and Dolphins back-to-back, then they’ll like, ‘You know what, we’re gonna trade away a Trent Brown, Josh Uche and Kendrick Bourne,” he said. “But I think when you’re looking at this team and where the franchise is headed, if there are pieces they think are dispensable, hello Josh Uche, you can get, say a third-round pick for him. I would make that move. I think collecting extra draft capital is important as you need to rebuild this franchise.”

It will certainly be worth following what happens between now and Tuesday and how the day’s moves (or lack thereof) impact the rest of the 2023 season.
