Jurors will return Thursday to Dedham’s Norfolk County Superior Court to continue deliberations in the trial of Karen Read, a Mansfield woman charged in the death of her Boston police officer boyfriend, John O’Keefe.
Closing arguments took place on Tuesday and jurors began deliberations later in the afternoon without reaching a decision. Thursday is the third day of deliberations.
Read, 44, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of O’Keefe, who was found cold to the touch and unresponsive on Jan. 29, 2022, outside of a home in Canton.
Norfolk County prosecutors say Read struck O’Keefe with her SUV while driving intoxicated. Read’s attorney, David Yannetti, said during the trial’s opening statements that her car never struck O’Keefe and that others are to blame for his death.
On Wednesday, jurors left by 4 p.m.
The jury asked to see a copy of a report made by the state police’s Special Emergency Response Team (SERT). The team searched for evidence at 34 Fairview Road between 5:20 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. on Jan. 29, 2022.
The judge said the jurors have all the evidence they will receive and no more additional will be given.
The court also provided updated verdict slips to jurors after the defense team raised concerns. Language was added that gives jurors the option to choose not guilty to the lesser charges.
