Dave Roberts will forever be a part of Boston Red Sox history for his role in the 2004 comeback from 3-0 against the New York Yankees.
But even on the 20th anniversary of that championship run, Roberts doesn’t really want to talk about that right now. Not while his Los Angeles Dodgers currently hold a 3-0 lead in the World Series against those same Yankees.
Still, the lead and the opponent will inevitably cause outsiders’ minds to make that comparison. That was the case after the Dodgers’ win in Game 3 of the World Series Monday. A reporter mentioned to the Dodgers manager that he was one of the few people in the world who knows what it’s like to come back from 3-0 in the playoffs.

“Don’t talk about that,” Roberts said. “Wrong guy. Way too early.”
The reporter than framed it from another perspective. Roberts was a part of that 2004 Red Sox team that came back from a 3-0 series deficit to beat the Yankees in the ALCS. What did he learn from being a part of that comeback that could be applied now that he’s on the other side of a dominant series lead.
“I don‘t want to divulge any secrets,” Roberts said. “But from the other side, I just think that we have got to stay focused, stay urgent. I think offensively, to be quite honest we left a lot of runs out there tonight, still found a way to win a ballgame. There’s just got to be urgency. I just don’t want to let these guys up for air.”
The Dodgers are in a dominant position after beating the Yankees 4-2 in the Bronx Monday night. Now, Los Angeles sits just one win again from another World Series title.
Game 4 of the World Series is set for Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium, at which point the Dodgers should be saying, “Don’t let them win tonight.”
