‘Dangerous’ heat, humidity to peak in Mass. Tuesday with temperatures crossing 100

The intense heat and humidity that has blanketed Massachusetts in recent days will peak on Tuesday, with the possibility of record high temperatures for the month of June.

Little relief from the heat will be available early Tuesday morning. Already, temperatures had crossed 70 degrees in the state’s three largest cities, and Boston had surpassed 80 degrees by 6 a.m. Temperatures will rise as the day goes on, peaking in the afternoon.

Forecasters warned of temperatures in the high 90s or low 100s on Tuesday, with humidity making it feel even warmer, around 100 to 110. As a result, forecasters have set down an extreme heat warning for much of the state that lasts until 8 p.m.

“Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors,” forecasters said.

Temperatures could well set new records for the month of June: the existing record for Boston is 100, reached in 2021, 1952 and 1925. The record in Worcester is 98 set in 1952, and the record for Bradley International Airport in Connecticut is 100, reached in 1964 and 1952.

The forecasted highs for Tuesday have all three sites setting new records: Boston and Windsor Locks, Connecticut, are projected to hit 102, while Worcester is expected to reach 101.

The heat will mellow out slightly on Wednesday, but forecasters warned of more intense humidity, with temperatures feeling like 95 to 100.

Relief arrives on Thursday, with high pressure moving in from Canada. That will bring temperatures all the way down to the 70s for the end of the work week.
