WASHINGTON — The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department is introducing new aerial technology to enhance crime-fighting capabilities, WUSA reported.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Pamela Smith unveiled a new helicopter and drone program on Monday, highlighting them as crucial investments in public safety, according to the report.

“We have already seen success with the real-time crime center, and this is one more way to leverage new technology to protect officers, keep D.C. safe, and drive down crime,” Bowser said.
MPD’s new drone program includes five drones that will transmit information and provide real-time aerial views to on-scene commanders and officers, according to the report. Smith explained that the District’s restricted airspace necessitates a limited program with strict procedures.
“With the ability for the drones to link directly to our real-time crime center, we will be able to provide more information to our officers on the ground…” Smith added. “The drone program today will not utilize artificial intelligence, facial recognition, or be used for general surveillance purposes.”
The new upgraded Airbus helicopter, called Falcon 1, will also enhance the department’s capabilities by sending live videos and pictures to the real-time crime center, according to the report.
