COVID rates rising, but Westfield isn’t contemplating change in guidance

WESTFIELD — Acting Health Director Debra Mulvenna confirmed last week that COVID-19 cases are rising in the city, but officials have no plans to return to mask mandates.

The number of cases was down to “almost nil” until mid-August, said Mulvenna. Now the department sees 15 to 20 lab-confirmed cases per week. The latest data, covering Sept. 15-22, show 22 confirmed cases, and 21 from the previous week. And these are almost certainly not the total number of cases, Mulvenna said.

“If I’m seeing more lab-confirmed cases, then we have more home tests that are positive,” she said.
