Raul Malo, the frontman for popular country music band The Mavericks, shared an encouraging message with fans over the weekend after revealing his cancer diagnosis earlier this summer.
Malo said his “health signs are pointing in the right direction,” on The Mavericks’ Instagram Saturday, Aug. 3
“Round #2 is history now. Doctors are pleased with my progress. All the bloodwork and health signs are pointing in the right direction,” the 58-year-old wrote. “The only side effect this week was just an overwhelming sensation to lay down and do nothing. Which is just about impossible for me but I’m managing.”
The singer added that he was feeling “really good” Saturday and planned on taking his dogs for a walk and playing the guitar. Malo also used the update to thank his fans.
“You all have made me feel stronger than ever in spite of my weakened state,” the singer wrote. “The love and compassion shown to me in the last month has not only been touching, it has been beautifully overwhelming. I thank you and my family thanks you.”
Malo also encouraged others to take care of their own health.
“Remember to get yourself checked out by your doctor. Don’t put it off any longer,” he wrote.
Malo shared his diagnosis in a video posted to the band’s Instagram on Thursday, June 27. The singer said he discovered “two cancerous spots” during a routine physical, and that his doctors recommended that he start treatment after the Fourth of July.
Malo’s treatment could therefore impact some shows on The Mavericks’ tour. The band’s next show as part of their “Moon & Stars” tour is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9 at the Pinewood Bowl Theater in Lincoln, Nebraska.
