Country legend postpones special anniversary show due to illness

Connie Smith had to postpone a 60th anniversary show of her Grand Ole Opry induction this week due to an illness.

The 84-year-old country music legend broke the news to fans in an Instagram post Tuesday, just a day before she was set to take the Opry stage.

“Unfortunately, the special evening at the Grand Ole Opry planned for tomorrow night celebrating Connie Smith’s 60 years as an Opry member must be postponed,” the post reads. “We look forward to rescheduling this soon and to listening to wonderful lineup of folks performing tomorrow night!”

The Opry revealed that Smith and her husband Marty Stuart were overtaken by “the unwelcome presence of COVID” in their home.

“We will look forward to celebrating Connie’s 60th with her (and with Marty by her side) on a future date to be announced soon,” the Opry wrote. “Marty will also be rescheduling his concert planned for this Saturday in Louisville. Meanwhile, the Wednesday Night Opry will continue, and we hope you can join us. We love you, Connie and Marty!”

Fans flooded Smith’s post with prayers and well-wishes.

“Hope your family feels better soon, Connie!” one person wrote.

“I have been listening to Connie since 1964,” another wrote. “Get well soon, praying for you.”

“Prayers for you both,” another wrote. “COVID is not joke and seems to never go away.”

“Sending many sweet prayers to you and hope you have a speedy recovery,” another wrote. “GOD’S GOT YOU.”

Smith later appeared to be in good spirits after sharing a photo of her holding a cupcake on her Instagram. The Country Music Hall of Fame inductee also celebrated her Grand Ole Opry induction by posting on social media.
