Country band fresh off hiatus returns with historic honor, first tour in years

The Band Perry has returned to music and live performances in the best way they could have imagined.

The Grammy, CMA and ACM Award-winning band started last year by playing a hurricane benefit concert in Greeneville, Tennessee.

For frontwoman Kimberly Perry, this moment was incredibly serendipitous “because our community always supported me and our family and the band,” she told MassLive.

The singer-songwriter said that whenever The Band Perry, which took a two-year hiatus, returned, that “the right moment” would involve the people Perry values the most.

“It was just such a sweet night celebrating community, our past and everywhere that we’ve come from,” she said.

In an Instagram post from Dec. 31, 2025, the band said the benefit show “swung the door of our hearts and imaginations wide open to creating a million more.”

Perry reiterated that the band is taking this energy into 2026 by telling MassLive that she and her new bandmate, who is also her husband, “are just so thrilled to carry what I feel like I’ve always started.”

“This was my band, first and foremost, when I was 15,” Perry, 42, continued. “It’s always been a family band. This is season two and our new iteration of that, and we’re having a blast.”

Perry formed The Band Perry alongside brothers Neil and Reid in 2005. The trio was discovered by Garth Brooks’ manager, Bob Doyle, after several years. He helped the group sign with Big Machine Label Group, a joint venture with Republic Nashville, in 2009.

In 2010, The Band Perry burst onto the country music scene with their smash hit “If I Die Young.” The song topped the Hot Country Songs, Country Airplay and Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks charts. The hit single also peaked within the top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100.

In November 2025, “If I Die Young” became one of only 23 country songs to be certified Diamond (or selling 10 million units) by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). The honor makes Perry the only female artist to solo-write a Diamond-certified country song.

“That is the dream of every young songwriter … to have a song that would translate to that many people in so many different ways,” Perry said about the title. “Even though I got to write that one by myself in my little bedroom in East Tennessee, it’s been so much bigger than that moment. So much bigger than me as the writer. Honestly, even bigger than us as a band. And that’s been really, really cool to be a part of.”

Aside from its chart success, “If I Die Young” won a CMA for Single and Song of the Year in 2011. Fifteen years later, the “evergreen” track continues to have an impact on fans, whether they are singing it live with Perry or creating viral videos online.

“It does take on a life of itself, depending on what folks are needing it for in a particular moment,” Perry said. “It’s had every bit of life on the internet, from tributes from somebody who has lost somebody at a young age to my favorite ‘If I Die Dumb’ trend, which has made its way all through TikTok. So it’s just been such a phenomenal thing to be a part of.”

The Band Perry continued to see success with several more singles from their 2010 self-titled debut album. “You Lie,” “All Your Life” and “Postcard from Paris” all performed well on the country charts and have been certified either gold or platinum by the RIAA.

The band released its gold-certified sophomore album “Pioneer” in 2013, spawning the hit singles “Done,” “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely,” “Chainsaw” and “Better Dig Two,” the latter of which followed the success of “If I Die Young” by also topping the Hot Country Songs and Country Airplay charts.

The Band Perry won the group’s first Grammy Award when their cover of the country classic “Gentle On My Mind,” which was recorded for the documentary “Glen Campbell: I’ll Be Me,” won Best Country Duo/Group Performance in 2015.

Over the next decade, The Band Perry remained relatively quiet. This was mostly due to the band’s move to Interscope Records in 2016, a scrapped album and the group going independent. The group’s first round of new music arrived in 2018 as a five-song collection called “Coordinates.”

The Band Perry then officially went on a hiatus in 2023, with Perry focusing on a solo career. She released a solo EP called “Bloom” in June 2023 and its accompanying full-length project “Superbloom,” the following October.

“It was an interesting thing, though, because it’s a very different creative mindset for me than being Kimberly, lead singer of The Band Perry,” she explained.

“It was a beautiful project. I’m so happy I made it. But I am a band girl through and through,” Perry continued. “I love playing on stage with the same crew every night. I love feeling like my family members are on stage with me and that we’re all equally creating. That’s really important to me.”

In July 2025, The Band Perry re-signed with Big Machine Label Group. That was when Perry’s husband, Jonny Costello, replaced her brother Neil as backing vocalist. Perry’s other brother, Reid, left The Band Perry in October 2025 to focus on a career in artist management.

“To the fans, you’ve always been my favorite part of this. I’ve decided to leave TBP,” Reid wrote in an Instagram post on Oct. 13, 2025.

“I’ll be missing seeing you in the crowd at a Band Perry show, but I’ll be around, managing a new voice I believe in more than anything, Ryan Coleman,” he continued. “For me, it was and will always be about making great country music, with and for the hardworking people who love it and live it. Thank you for every memory, I’ll see you back in the saddle. I wish Kimberly and TBP the best as they move forward into the future.”

In addition to falling “in love with the management side of music,” Perry said her brother “decided that he would love to stay out with his horses and Joshua Tree.”

“He’s raising five wild mustangs out in the desert,” she added. “He was a little more interested in that than coming on the road, which is wonderful and fine. And so he’s going to pivot to management.”

Despite her brothers leaving the band, Perry says the transition to performing as a husband-and-wife duo has been “seamless,” adding that “it’s so fun to be in a band with your husband.”

“We work really, really well as a couple because he is very much like our homemaker and OCD about things staying in order at the house and on the home front, and I’m that way with the business,” she continued. “And so both things have to be taken care of and handled really well, and I think we’re a great partnership in that way.”

Perry is looking to make new memories on her band’s first concert tour in roughly seven years. The Band Perry will continue its 2026 tour through April before playing a few festivals later in the year. Afterward, the duo will get back into the studio to complete a new record, which Perry said they are “very close” to finishing.

The Band Perry has already posted a snippet of a new song on social media. The video shows a hand sticking a small sword into a cake with a heart design on top, then pulling out a large chunk from the jam-filled center.

Fans have called the teaser “Taylor coded” in reference to Taylor Swift’s “Reputation” era, while others said it gave them “Ready or Not vibes.”

“I can’t wait to hear new music from you guys soon,” one fan commented on Instagram.

Meanwhile, comments on TikTok included “I’m already obsessed,” “we hungry girl” and “we’re so back.”
