Council votes resolve muddle over Springfield police hiring, firing

SPRINGFIELD – After extended debate, the City Council has passed three proposals that will allow Deputy Chief Lawrence E. Akers to hold the same powers as the current police superintendent.

The council took the final vote Tuesday, creating an ordinance giving the Board of Police Commissioners powers to discipline and fire officers found responsible for misconduct. The day before, it approved a similar ordinance that will continue to give the powers of hiring and promotion to the superintendent, City Council President Michael Fenton said.
