WESTFIELD – As the region digs out from the snowstorm, frigid temperatures are still forecast to remain this week, too.
So, as we fight our snowblowers before enjoying hot chocolate under a warm blanket, WG&E wants to remind everyone of the impact this season’s cold may have on our energy bills.
When temperatures drop, furnaces and heating systems work harder to keep homes warm, resulting in increased energy usage.
The impending cold led to skyrocketing prices for wholesale natural gas and electricity as energy providers geared up to supply their customers, which led to power pricing traded above historical records, possibly at some of the highest spot prices ever in the New England market.
Spot natural gas prices rose nearly 70% in just three days to the highest prices we have seen since 2022.
Despite these prices, Westfield’s customers will not see a rate increase in their bills. In fact, WG&E rates remain stable this season, for the third year in a row. WG&E’s residential gas rates are approximately 23% lower than Eversource’s rates. WG&E’s electric rates are nearly half of Eversource’s at $0.17 per kilowatt-hour compared to $0.33 per kilowatt-hour.
“Even with WG&E’s stable rates, we know that the cold weather and increased usage will impact our customers’ bills,” said general manager of Westfield Gas & Electric/Whip City Fiber, Tom Flaherty. “We encourage customers to be conscientious about their energy use and to reach out to us if they need assistance.”
