A tropical storm could bring conditions akin to a nor’easter to the Bay State as soon as this weekend, forecasters say.
A hybrid coastal storm approaching New England’s southern waters late Sunday will collide with a strong surface high-pressure area settled over Quebec, Maine and parts of the Canadian Maritimes, creating strong northeast winds and rough seas across the region, National Weather Service forecasters wrote.
Forecasters’ confidence regarding rainfall associated with the storm is increasing, with 48-hour totals through Tuesday morning likely to exceed 1 to 2 inches. The heaviest rain is expected to be confined to the Interstate 95 corridor between North Carolina and Massachusetts, according to AccuWeather.
Meteorologists at AccuWeather believe the system could strengthen into a named tropical storm, but may be more like a nor’easter, just without the snow.
“This will be a damaging storm for some along the Atlantic coast,” AccuWeather Chief On-Air Meteorologist Bernie Rayno said.
The stormy conditions come on the heels of below-normal temperatures across New England, which prompted forecasters with the weather service to warn of freeze and frost. The frost and sub-freezing conditions continued into Friday morning.
Below-normal temperatures are expected throughout the day Friday, despite some sunshine. Still, it won’t be as cold as Thursday.
Ahead of the storm, Saturday should remain dry, though forecasters do expect increasing clouds as the day goes on.
