More hazy days due to wildfire smoke in Canada are likely to stay in Massachusetts this week, before a round of potential rain and thunderstorms could hit.
An Air Quality Alert on Monday covering all of southern New England is expected to be lifted by 12 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service. This was issued so that people, including sensitive groups like children and older adults, could keep themselves safe from smoke particulates if they have asthma, lung or heart disease.
Temperatures should cool into the high 70s or low 80s as a cold front from Canada moves into southern New England on Tuesday, the weather service said.
Other than cooler temperatures, forecasters expect skies to remain smoky but “it may not be as noticeable with the cloudier skies,” forecasters wrote.
Dry conditions should continue through Wednesday, but this could change as a chance for some precipitation developing later that day and into Thursday could hit Western Massachusetts, forecasters said. Isolated showers could be aggravated by marginal instability, which could produce storms. It is not clear in terms of these potential storms’ timing or how severe it could be, with room for things to change.
Springfield, Great Barrington and Amherst, among other communities, could see showers develop after 1 p.m. on Thursday, though these chances are low at around 20%, according to the weather service. The potential timing of wet weather differs elsewhere, with Pittsfield possibly seeing a chance for showers and thunderstorms between 2 and 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and before 8 a.m. Thursday.
Temperatures should be in the 80s each day, while they could inch closer to the 90s by the weekend, forecasters said.
