Chilly, overcast Thursday sets stage for Mass. weekend cold snap

Isolated showers, chilly temperatures and overcast skies are in the forecast for Massachusetts on Thursday, before the real cold snap moves in over the weekend.

Peeks of sunshine are expected to break through the mostly cloudy skies at times after sunrise, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures will be in the upper 50s in areas like Pittsfield and Worcester, and will hit the 60s in Boston, Springfield and on Cape and the Islands.

But after 1 p.m., there’s a possibility for brief, isolated showers across the state, forecasters warned. Winds may gust up to 25 mph, especially along the coastline.

Friday is expected to be much of the same conditions, with temperatures ranging in the high 50s to low 60s, though winds should die down.

A cold snap is then expected to move in this weekend across the state.

Temperatures on Saturday and Sunday morning may only be in the upper 20s and 30s statewide, and highs during the daytime may struggle to reach the 50s, forecasters said.

Some higher elevation areas of the state may only reach the upper 40s. Sunday is expected to be the chillier of the two days.

Forecasters are also eyeing the potential for more rain next week — and even a stronger coastal storm developing by mid- to late week.
