A child was seriously injured when their bike hit a tree in Charlton Thursday afternoon, and plans to fly them to a hospital had to be scuttled due to weather conditions, officials said.
Charlton firefighters went to 34 Jennings Drive around 3:50 p.m. Thursday for a reported bicycle accident involving a child, the department wrote on Facebook. Fire Chief Rob Barton said in an email it was “quite obvious” the bike had hit a tree, and no other vehicles are believed to be involved.
First responders requested a medical helicopter to the area given the severity of the child’s injuries, the department said. But UMass Memorial LifeFlight said it could not fly due to weather conditions — the region was pummeled by heavy rain and flooding on Thursday.
A ground transport unit from the hospital met a Chalrton ambulance in Auburn and the teams “worked together to continue delivering the highest level of care during transport to Worcester,” the fire department said.
“Please keep the child and their family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” the post reads.
Charlton Police are investigating the crash. A dispatcher referred all inquiries to the Worcester district attorney’s office.
