Chicopee receives federal grant to upgrade inefficient lighting

CHICOPEE — The city recently received a $116,600 award from the U.S. Department of Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program to upgrade the lighting in City Hall.

“Currently the lighting is severely outdated and inefficient regarding energy use and aspects related to the quality of life for those who must conduct business in the building,” said City Planner Lee Pouliot in a letter to the City Council and the mayor.

Studies show it will cost about $565,000 to upgrade all the lighting. The grant will pay about 21% of the project, he said.

The City Council voted 13-0 last week to accept the grant, which will be put toward the proposed second phase of city hall renovations. No monetary match was necessary to receive the grant.
