Central Mass. high school closes early for winter break due to burst water main

Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District’s David Prouty High School is closing early for winter break due to a burst water main, according to the school district.

Around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, a sprinkler main line burst on the second floor of the building, resulting in water damage to both floors of the school, Superintendent Paul Haughey wrote to families. Students were quickly dismissed for the day, and administrators soon cancelled classes and school activities on Wednesday.

“While recovery efforts began immediately, school officials have determined that additional time is required to complete repairs and ensure the facility is safe for students and staff,” Haughey wrote.

Classes at the high school are cancelled for the rest of the year. They are now set to resume after winter break on Monday, Jan. 5, 2026.

Students and staff who need to retrieve belongings from the school can do so on Thursday, Dec. 18, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., Haughey wrote. Anyone looking to pick up their items during that time should first check in at the main office.

“We are doing everything within our power to restore the facility safely,” Haughey wrote. “The safety of our learning community is our top priority. We sincerely thank our students, staff, and families for their patience, support, and understanding as we work to bring the high school back online.”

Future updates will be shared via the Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District’s website.
