BOSTON — The Celtics made history in more ways than one on Tuesday night at TD Garden. A couple hours after raising the franchise’s 18th championship banner to the rafters, the Celtics entered the record books one more time thanks to some sensational 3-point shooting.
Boston broke the record for most 3-point makes in a game in franchise history, topping the 27 makes that came against the Knicks on November 5, 2022. The Celtics nearly beat that mark in just the first three quarters, making 26 3-point field goals over the opening 36 minutes. Jaylen Brown officially broke the record with a make with 11:04 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Celtics made NBA history later in the fourth quarter after matching the Bucks’ mark of 29 3-point makes set in December 2020. However, they were unable to get over the hump in the final eight minutes of the game, tallying 13 straight misses in their request to set a new NBA record. The team also set a franchise record for 3-point attempts with 61, going 29-of-61 overall to shoot 47 percent from 3-point range in the 132-109 win.

Jayson Tatum led the charge for the hosts in the historic night, knocking down eight 3s in the first three quarters alone before resting for the final frame. Derrick White was also red-hot from downtown, making six 3s in the first three quarters. All five starters made at least three 3-point attempts in the victory, helping Boston crush the Knicks in their regular season opener.
The high 3-point frequency is likely a sign of things to come for Boston under Joe Mazzulla who has emphasized 3-point shooting throughout his tenure. Boston already finished last season with the highest 3-point shooting rate in the NBA and they hoisted up 61 3-point attempts in their first preseason game, which would have set a franchise record for most in a regular season or playoff game per stat guru Dick Lipe.
The Celtics will look to continue their hot 3-point shooting on Thursday night in their first road matchup of the year against the Wizards.
