What skillset and player should we target for the 15th roster spot? Should we choose someone from our two-way players or look for external options from the buyout market? Since we got Xavier (a big man) and Springer (a defender), I feel like the 15th roster spot should go to a big wing defender or a ball handler. What do you think? — Nash (Philippines)

Hey Brian,  The other contenders seem to be jumping on these buyout targets. Available players are drying up quickly.  What do you think Brad’s waiting for or who is he looking at right now?  Do you think there’s a chance they don’t sign anyone and leave the spot open? — Frank S

Based on conversations I’ve had, look for the Celtics to play the waiting game for a little bit here to fill out this spot. The team is largely healthy at this point so there is no need to fill out this spot immediately, nor a ca n’t-miss player option that’s available on the open market. I’d certainly bet over an external option over a two-way guy at this point when the signing does happen and think ultimately a big wing defender would be the best option for this group if everyone is healthy in a perfect world. Whether that type of player actually becomes available in the next few weeks remains to be seen. The key buyout deadline for players is March 1st so I’d expect the Celtics to wait until closer to that date to make any decisions to get a fuller idea of what’s available on the market. Holding off also protects the team against the possibility of needing to add a specific position in case injuries hit a certain part of the roster.

Hello Brian. If you get the chance for interview/press availability with Brad/Owners, can you ask them about Jrue/White extensions? Also, what’s stopping them from paying up, drafting well, signing vet min guys, accepting 2nd apron punishments,& keep this going for years to come? — Eddy FB

The team can’t legally negotiate a deal with White this season until the summer or talk extension with Jrue until later this year so don’t expect we will hear from them on this topic anytime soon. As far as spending goes for the future, that path you described is certainly a clear option for next season if the team is willing to pay some hefty luxury tax penalties. I’d go so far as to say that scenario being likely if they end up winning the title since second apron punishments will be far easier to swallow with that backdrop. Ultimately, when the repeater tax penalties come into play starting with the 2025-26 season, that’s when tougher decisions will need to be made and payroll seems likely to be cut barring some unprecedented spending.
