Cars found doing doughnuts, burnouts in Boston neighborhood

Boston police received a flurry of calls early Sunday morning reporting dozens of cars drag racing and driving the wrong way in the city’s Back Bay neighborhood, according to a police report.

Police went to the area of Dartmouth and Marlborough Streets around 2:13 a.m. Sunday, after callers reported a group of 40 people had gathered in the area and were yelling. Callers also reported 15 vehicles were driving up and down both streets the wrong way. Police were also told a group of cars were drag racing on Commonwealth Avenue, according to the report, a copy of which was obtained by MassLive.

Approximately 30 calls were made to Boston police early Sunday to report the racing and wrong-way driving, according to the report. Massachusetts State Police also went to the area.

The area was so congested with cars that responding officers could not get to the intersection, and had to park their cruisers and walk up on foot, police wrote in the report.

When officers made it to the area, they found large groups of people gathering at multiple intersections along Marlborough Street with multiple vehicles facing the wrong way on the one-way road and others doing doughnuts and burnouts. The drivers were spinning their tires on the pavement, prompting white smoke to fly up into the air, diminishing visibility, according to the report.

Officers told the crowds to disperse and as they attempted to reopen the road, a glass bottle and fireworks were thrown at police, according to the report.

Police saw what appeared to be multiple professional cameras recording the drivers, police wrote.

In all, 41 vehicles were blocking the road near Marlborough and Dartmouth streets. Of those, 26 were registered in Massachusetts, 10 in Maine, two were from Rhode Island, and one each was from Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Illinois, according to the report.
