Police are looking for a man accused of stealing a car parked outside a Gardner hospital Monday afternoon, while a child was still inside it.
Officers responded Monday afternoon to reports of a car stolen from Heywood Hospital with a child inside. The suspect, who police did not identify, stole the car at Heywood Hospital, drove a short distance and ordered the child to exit the vehicle, Massachusetts State Police said in a statement.
The child made it out of the vehicle unharmed.
Police used data from a cell phone in the vehicle to track it along Route 2 and eventually Interstate 495 North. When the suspect saw state police cruisers, he began acting erratically, according to the statement.
State police did not pursue the vehicle “for the safety of other motorists,” the statement reads.
A short time later, police found the abandoned vehicle in Lowell.
Police have determined the identity of the suspect and an investigation into his whereabouts is ongoing, according to the statement.
