Can Bill Belichick save his job as coach of Patriots? (podcast)

The speculation of whether the Patriots will move on from Bill Belichick has been an ongoing topic. And it’s only amplified since NBC Sports Boston’s Tom E. Curran reported that Robert Kraft made the decision after New England’s loss in Germany to move on from the coach after the 2023 season.

Unsurprisingly, Belichick didn’t address the report when asked about it, only responding that he was preparing for the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.

It’s a topic that won’t go away until whatever decision Kraft makes is official. But it’s worth wondering if Belichick’s job is even salvageable at this point.

On the latest episode of “Eye On Foxborough,” MassLive Patriots reporters Chris Mason and Mark Daniels discuss whether there’s anything Belichick can do in order to keep his job as head coach.

“Even if they won out the rest of the way, then you finish a 7-10. It’s still another losing season. And I don’t know, I think the direction of the franchise is an issue,” Mason said. “I don’t think there’s any chance this actually happens. So, I know we’re dealing hypotheticals right now, but I just don’t see it. I think it’s the totality of this operation that is just really rotten. The roster stinks. The offensive design stinks. There’s just a lot of things where you look at it and it’s like, from the top down, it’s just not good. It’s not well run, and that’s why I think you’ll see them move on.”

Daniels responded: “This is what would have to happen: Thee Patriots would have to win out, they’d have to win four games, Bailey Zappe would have to average like 300 yards, three (to) four touchdowns a game (and) look like a future franchise quarterback. Bill Belichick would have to go to Robert Kraft and be like, ‘You know what? You can hire a GM. That’s not going to happen. I think you’re right even if they do win out and even if Bailey Zappe all of a sudden looks like a franchise quarterback, it’s too far gone.”

Belichick is far from the only issue the Patriots have had this season. But there are plenty of questions the team must answer this offseason including their coach, quarterback situation and what direction they go in the 2024 NFL Draft.
