NEW YORK — Dashcam and body-worn camera video shows the moment an officer with the New York Police Department was hit by a suspect’s vehicle.
On May 24, officers Anthony Pace and Abid Azam conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle for a faulty brake light, according to an NYPD incident analysis released on July 19.
Pace made contact with the driver. After a brief conversation, Pace asked the man to step out of the vehicle.
Pace then opened the suspect’s driver-side door and continued asking him to step out of the vehicle. The suspect then sped through an intersection, striking Azam, who was walking in front of the suspect’s vehicle, body camera video shows.
As the suspect fled from the traffic stop, Pace, who was assigned to a strategic response group, fired shots from his service weapon.
The suspect was apprehended on May 28 on charges of first-degree attempted assault, second-degree assault (police officer), first-degree reckless endangerment, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle and other related charges, the NYPD said.
