BWC: Man whacks empty cruiser at LASD substation with machete, approaches deputy before fatal OIS

LOS ANGELES COUNTY, Calif. —The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department released body camera video showing an officer-involved shooting of a man who approached a deputy with a machete.

The Jan. 30 incident began when a deputy parked in the Paramount Sheriff’s Substation parking lot heard loud banging noises nearby, according to the release. He then moved his vehicle out of a parking space before encountering a man approaching him with a machete.

Surveillance footage shows the man striking an unoccupied cruiser with the machete before walking toward the deputy.
Body camera footage shows the deputy issuing commands to drop the weapon as the man continued to walk toward him.

“Get on the ground, now!” the deputy can be heard saying.

The suspect then began to increase his pace, prompting the deputy to fire shots at him.

Other deputies responded to render aid after the shooting until EMS personnel arrived, according to the release. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. A machete with a 16-inch blade was recovered following the incident.
