BWC: Man fleeing stop strikes Ohio officer, cruiser with car

WHITEHALL, Ohio — Body camera footage shows the moment an officer and a cruiser were struck by a driver fleeing a traffic stop, WSYX reported.

The incident began on June 10 when a Flock camera alerted Whitehall police to a vehicle whose owner had a warrant issued by the Dublin Police Department, according to the report. Officers attempted to stop his vehicle in a parking lot.

Video shows that after initially complying with officers’ instructions, the driver reversed and drove away, striking an officer and a police cruiser. Officers later located the car. The driver then exited the vehicle and fled on foot but was apprehended and taken into custody without incident.

The suspect has been charged with felonious assault and failure to comply, in addition to his existing warrants, according to the report.

Whitehall Deputy Chief Dan Kelso reported that the officer struck by Moore’s vehicle is recovering well.

“It is scary. This guy had virtually the most minor warrant you could get—it was a traffic warrant, an unpaid traffic ticket,” Kelso said. “An extremely calm situation went 0 to 100 in a matter of seconds. That’s how fast situations can turn for police officers.”
