BWC: Man accused of murdering 13-year-old daughter reaches for handgun before OIS

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Columbus Division of Police released body camera footage showing a SWAT officer shooting a Toledo man who was wanted in connection with the killing of his 13-year-old daughter, the Columbus Dispatch reported.

The suspect was being surveilled by Columbus police after being identified by the Toledo Police Department as the last person seen with the girl, whose body was found with neck wounds in an abandoned house in Toledo earlier in the week, according to the report

The video shows a SWAT officer approaching the suspect. The suspect is seen walking with his right hand inside his sweatshirt and a walkie-talkie in his left hand. The officer, with his gun drawn, orders him to stop and show his hands.

The man refuses, repeatedly telling the officer, “Just kill me.” Despite commands to show his hands, he keeps his right hand in his hoodie, appearing to handle a firearm. As he begins to pull out what is later confirmed to be a revolver, the officer fires multiple shots, striking the man.

Additional SWAT officers quickly arrived to secure the scene. The suspect, now on the ground, tells officers, “I don’t want to die, bro.” Officers rendered aid and kept him upright until medics arrived. He was transported to a hospital in stable condition.

Police recovered a revolver and walkie-talkie from the scene, according to the report. No officers were injured. In addition to facing charges in Toledo for the murder of his daughter, the man has been charged in Franklin County with felonious assault for attempting to draw his weapon on the officer.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is reviewing the officer-involved shooting, as required by city policy, according to the report.

The law, House Bill 495, requires Gov. Mike Kehoe to appoint a transition director to oversee the state takeover’s implementation; that period will need to end by July 1, 2026

The bill would increase the age to 12 years old in 2026, up from the current 10, depending on the severity of the crime; he threshold would then be increased further to 14 in 2028
