Burlington’s Ryan Brooks, Leila Gilligan win pentathlon at D-IV state track & field

The first day of the 2025 MIAA Division IV state track & field championships took place on Friday at Merrimack College.

17 medal events took place between the boys’ and girls’ meets, with the rest of the events taking place on Sunday, June 1st beginning at 2 p.m.

Burlington track & field swept both pentathlon events, with Ryan Brooks winning on the boys’ side and Leila Gilligan clinching victory on the girls’ side.

Brooks scored key points in the shot put and the long jump, placing first in both pentathlon events. As the only competitor with two first-place finishes, Brooks made up the difference from his eighth-place finish in the 110m hurdles.

His third and fourth-place finishes in the high jump and the 1500m respectively brought him to 3223 points, ahead of Apponquet Regional’s Thomas Smith with 3179 points.

Leila Gilligan had a stronger start on the girls’ side with a second-place finish in the 100m hurdles, but her sixth and 10th-place finishes in the shot put and the high jump dropped her to fifth entering the long jump.

A second-place finish in the long jump moved her into fourth and back into the conversation, but still trailing the top spot by 83 points.

But her first-place finish in the 800m fueled her to victory, scoring a total of 2562 points to outpace Haleigh Cyr of Greater Lawrence Tech with 2506 points.

Chicopee wins both 200m events

Chicopee’s Sophia Guzman and Rayzaiah Ocasio each won the 200m dash in their respective meets for the Pacers.

Guzman narrowly beat out her competition, winning by just six-hundredths of a second (25.29) over Amherst-Pelham Reg.’s Moriah Luetjen (25.35).

Ocasio’s margin of victory was hardly any larger, finishing at 22.11 seconds, barely crossing ahead of Gabe Lemar of Pembroke with 25.25.
