Bruins rumored to be a suitor for star free agent

The Bruins are reportedly one of the teams exploring the possibility of signing free agent Patrick Kane the former Blackhawks star is close to returning from offseason hip surgery.

Kane, 35, had 451 goals and 786 assists and could potentially give a contender a surge of offense if he’s anything close to his old form. He spent 15+ years with Chicago before being traded to the Rangers during the season last year.

There are reportedly several teams interested in signing him. If the Bruins are one of them they’d have to create some cap space. Their lack of salary cap space is why they weren’t serious suitors to bring back Tyler Bertuzzi or Dmitry Orlov.

On his “32 Thoughts” podcast, SportsNet’s Elliotte Friedman said there are teams who believe the Bruins are lurking in the Kane pursuit:

“There’s a couple teams out there who suspect that Boston might be another team that’s poked around on this. It’s all circumstantial evidence, but it makes sense because the thing about Boston is they’re a good team, they could win,” Friedman said. “I don’t know if they could do more than one year. I am not sure that makes any sense for them. But they are the kind of organization that would look at Kane and say, ‘Does this help us?’ Or in a good year, ‘What can we add to make us better? If you look at last year, they went for it. They lost in the first round, they gave up a lot of capital, but it was a go-for-it year for them. … And they’re good again.”
