Bruins honor shooting victims at Brown, Australia before Tuesday’s game

BOSTON — The Bruins made a series of gestures before Tuesday’s game against Utah at TD Garden to honor the victims of the shootings in Providence at Brown University and in Australia.

Before the national anthem, TD Garden had a moment of silence with the Brown logo and a map of Australia and a heart on the videoboard.

Ahead of warm-ups, they hung a Bruins jersey behind the bench with the number 401 (the Providence area code) on the back and “BROWN UNIV” in the nameplate slot.

Bruins alternate captain Charlie McAvoy wore a Brown University sweatshirt as he entered TD Garden for the game.

The Boston and Providence Bruins released a joint statement over the weekend:

The Boston Bruins and Providence Bruins are extremely saddened to learn of the tragic events that took place this evening at Brown University.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to those affected and their families and are keeping the Brown University community and the city of Providence in our thoughts during this difficult time.”

The Bruins organization is planning to announce a plan to donate money to aid the victims through its foundation.

The shooting in Providence happened Saturday afternoon during a final exam review. Two students were killed and nine others were injured. Police are still searching for the shooter.

In Australia, according to The Associated Press, two gunmen attacked a Hanukkah celebration at Sydney’s Bondi Beach on Sunday, killing at least 11 people. At least 29 people were wounded. It is the deadliest shooting in almost three decades in a country with strict gun control laws.

One of the shooters was fatally shot by police. The second, who was arrested, was in critical condition, authorities told the A.P.
