Bruins GM reveals free agency goal for forward who had career season

BOSTON — Morgan Geekie wants to stay in Boston and become a cornerstone piece for the Bruins.

The Bruins want to make that happen.

“We’re currently going through (contract negotiations) to extend him,” general manager Don Sweeney said Wednesday. “Our goal is to have a long-term deal.”

Geekie had a career year with 33 goals — 26 at 5-on-5 — and 24 assists. He’s set to become a restricted free agent once free agency opens on July 1.

Sweeney didn’t go into detail about his conversations with Geekie and his representatives, but noted both sides want to find a landing spot. The general manager also noted that the Bruins need extra scoring depth and deepen the scoring ability on the wing. Not coming to terms with Geekie would only deepen that issue for the 2025-26 season.

Geekie was a bright spot for the Bruins during a tough season that saw the Original Six team miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2015-16 campaign. After being healthy scratched and having his name in trade rumors, the forward found strong chemistry with David Pastrnak and Elias Lindholm and became an integral part to the offense.

“I’m sure people thought it was a fluke, maybe,” Geekie said during Bruins breakup day last week. “I know my shooting percentage is higher than normal. I think that’s more of a high-quality shot thing. I think I have the asset to shoot the puck as well as I do.

“I think up until this year, I was a little hesitant to use it, especially playing with guys that you’re normally used to deferring to,” he continued. “And it’s tough not to pass to (Pastrnak) most times. But I mean, he’s made it super easy for me to be able to be in the position to take shots, and then to have the confidence to shoot the puck and not be afraid to take that next step when it comes to those opportunities.”

The Bruins are projected to have about $28 million in cap space, per PuckPedia. Along with Geekie, defenseman Mason Lohrei will also be an RFA.

After a breakout year, Geekie is expected to get a raise from his $2 million salary he made in 2024-25.
