BOSTON — During a time in which the Bruins have lost nine straight games, it’s tough to find the positives.
But despite Tuesday’s 4-3 loss to the Washington Capitals, Boston showed some fight — literally — and effort that’s been absent during its last nine games.
“Guys are trying to get a win here. We’re all trying to get a win here,” interim coach Joe Sacco said. “Credit to our guys, they battled back. That’s the attitude we have to have right now.”
David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie continued to find their chemistry together with the latter assisting on both of Pastrnak’s goals against Washington.
“He’s been so much fun to watch, honestly,” Pastrnak said of Geekie. “He’s been getting better with every game and practice, and he wants to get better. … He battles hard and he’s becoming a heck of a player.
Marat Khusnutdinov had a great play that led to Vinni Lettieri’s goal and Jeffrey Viel sparked some life into the team when he and Capitals journeyman Dylan McIlrath went toe-to-toe for nearly a minute in a spirited, heavyweight bout.
Regardless of the Bruins being at the bottom of the standings, they know they still need to show up each day and play for each other.
“No matter what position we are, we’re still in the NHL and playing in the best league,” Pastrnak said. “There’s no day you can take for granted in here. You’re wearing a Boston Bruins jersey. Pride and compete have to be there every day, whether it’s practice or game day.”
And while the Bruins have hit rock bottom and find themselves at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, they know it’s up to them to get out of this slump.
“The only way out of this is to keep working and keep. battling,” Lettieri said. “The hardest thing when you’re in a slump is trying to keep the energy up and keep doing the right things.”
