The Bruins have faced a lot of issues during the 2024-25 season, including their play in the second period.
That trend continued Sunday in its 6-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Center. The Bruins jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period, but allowed Buffalo to score three times in the following frame.
The Sabres scored three more in the third, including an empty-netter to seal the win.
“We just weren’t good enough in the second, and in the third, just soft,” Elias Lindholm, who scored in his third straight game, told reporters after the game. “It’s not good enough. … We’ve been pretty bad in the second period. Usually, we get off to a good start and in the second we fall apart a little bit. It’s tough to win games when stuff like that happens so it’s something that obviously we can do better.”
The Bruins were playing the second night of a back-to-back and were coming off a 5-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes after an ugly 10-game losing streak. Coach Joe Sacco said fatigue might have set in for Sunday’s game.
“That’s when the decision making goes, and that’s where you really have to be mentally strong and mentally tough in those areas,” he said. “We can’t give up. We can’t let people get behind us in those situations and give breakaways up on our goaltender. That’s not gonna work.”
