Bruins’ Brad Marchand recalls what he learned from Mark Recchi

PHILADELPHIA — Sitting on the Bruins bench, as the Flyers honored Mark Recchi Saturday at the Wells Fargo Center, Bruins captain Brad Marchand thought back about what Recchi meant to him, especially early in his career.

“It’s awesome to see guys like that get recognized. He’s such a great guy and teammate and had such an incredible career,” Marchand said after the Bruins’ 6-2 win. “He deserves all the recognition he’s getting and it’s a lot of fun to be able to sit here and watch it.”

Recchi, a Hockey Hall of Famer, who spent 10 of his 22 seasons with Philadelphia and was inducted into the Flyers’ team Hall of Fame Saturday. He spent the last three years of his career with the Bruins. By that point, he wasn’t nearly the offensive producer he was during his peak, but he was a respected and well-liked leader. He was a key piece of the Bruins’ 2011 Stanley Cup-winning team, often playing on a line with Patrice Bergeron, who was still young and Marchand, who was a rookie.

Now the Bruins captain, Marchand still thinks of Recchi as one of the players, whose mentorship impacted the Marchand tries to lead.

“He always talked about playing the right way. That’s one thing him and Bergy were both great at. But I see just the way that he kind of managed the room as a leader and talked at certain times and recognized things,” Marchand said. “Circle back to those days and conversations I had with him and Bergy and Z (Zdeno Chara). Some of those stick with you for a long time when guys of their caliber filter their knowledge down. I learned a lot from them and it was, it was an honor playing with them.”
