The first period was all Bruins as they controlled much of the opening 20 minutes, outshot the Oilers 12-5 and took a 2-0 lead into intermission.
Lindholm opened the scoring just 67 seconds into the game. Mark Kastelic doubled the lead with a nifty backhand on a great effort to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead with 2:25 left in the period.
“It was a good transition play. I don’t know exactly how it started,” Kastleic told NESN’s Judd Sirott during first intermission. “… I just tried to take it to the net and good things happened.”
The Oilers cut Boston’s lead in half 8:33 into the second when Zach Hyman scored from the faceoff circle and beat Jeremy Swayman on a goal through his leg pads. Boston killed two Edmonton penalties and continued to be strong on defense to hold on to a 2-1 lead at the end of the second.
With 2:21 left in the game and the Oilers in desperate need of a goal Connor McDavid came up big and scored to tie things up at 2-2.
While clearly gassed in overtime, David Pastrnak went for the line change before the Oilers rushed up the ice and Ekholm potted the game-winner.
While he didn’t show up on the stat sheet, Oliver Wahlstrom had a solid defensive debut for the Bruins. The newcomer had two shots and one black in 8:51 of ice time.
Swayman, who made his third straight start, made 23 saves in the loss.
