Bruins’ All-Star appreciates what NHL legend tried to do for him

With just over a minute left in the first semifinal of the NHL All-Star game and Team MacKinnon leading Team McDavid, 3-1, Sidney Crosby pushed the puck backwards off the boards to the Bruins/Team MacKinnon goalie Jeremy Swayman.

At the other end, Team McDavid had pulled the goalie, so the Penguins superstar gave Swayman the puck.

Swayman has made no secret about his desire to score a rare goalie goal, a quest that intensified when his fellow Bruins netminder Linus Ullmark got one on Feb. 25, 2023.

So when Crosby got him the puck, Swayman set himself to launch the puck with a chance for the first All-Star game goalie goal. But realizing there was a player between him at the opposing goal, Swayman aborted the plan.

“I tried for it, but I had a guy right in front of me. I don’t want to take any teeth out in an All-Star game,” Swayman said. “I was looking for it. I couldn’t connect, unfortunately. I like that he was thinking my way. That’s cool.”

Team MacKinnon ended up losing the game in a shootout, capped by David Pastrnak’s clinching goal.

Swayman said the fact that a player of Crosby’s caliber tried to make it happen added to the moment.

“It’s really special being in this position. You grow up watching a guy like that,” Swayman said. “He’s the right kind of human being. He plays the right way. It’s really special to have this memory with him for a long time.”
