Bridge of Flowers is open again in Shelburne Falls — here’s how to spend the day

The Bridge of Flowers recently re-opened to the public in Shelburne Falls, after a $3.2 million renovation.

The colorful footbridge is visited annually by thousands from the state and far beyond, offering up scenic views of nature, including an array of flowers and plants.

Plantings on the bridge, located at 22 Water St., have historically included flowers like roses, lilies, daisies, dahlias, poppies, hibiscus and much more.

The seasonal area is designed for patrons to take a stroll and enjoy the views. No entrance fee is necessary, but donations are encouraged, a sign outside the bridge writes.

If you’re in the area and want to explore beyond the flower bridge, across the street is Mo’s Fudge Factor — a family-owned ice cream, fudge and candy shop.

The store carries dozens of ice cream flavors, and just about any sweets you can think of, from old-school candy, to salt water taffy, sour chews and fudge bars in multiple flavors.

Next to the bridge, you will also find Nancy L. Dole Books and Ephemera, a business filled with unique antiques and vintage books. It carries everything from rare historical items, to newspapers, geology reports of the area, posters and more.

On both sides of the bridge, within walking distance, visitors can find many other businesses and restaurants, offering plenty to do to warrant a day trip.

Another nearby attraction offered by Mother Nature is the Glacial Potholes, “kettles” or round holes left behind by glaciers found in the rock on the Deerfield River, at the base of Salmon Falls. It is located only a walk away from the bridge at the end of Deerfield Avenue in Shelburne Falls.
