Brad Stevens raves about Celtics free agent Blake Griffin

The Celtics frontcourt will look much different next season following the acquisition of Kristaps Porzingis following a blockbuster offseason trade.

What type of depth Porzingis will have around him at the end of the roster remains to be seen with just weeks remaining before training camp. Boston currently has two open roster spots on the 15-man roster along with an open two-way spot.

One of the players reportedly in the mix for one of those spots is veteran Blake Griffin. In an appearance on Jones and Mego as part of the NESN/WEEI Jimmy Fund telethon on Tuesday, Brad Stevens spoke fondly of the big man while discussing the team’s frontcourt situation last year.

“Our bigs were pretty thin,” Stevens said. “When (Robert Williams III) was out at the start of the year, those guys that played in his place did an amazing job of keeping us afloat. Blake was as good as it gets both on and off the court.”

Griffin took his time to join the Celtics last season, signing with the team midway through the first week of training camp. He spoke quite fondly of the experience in an appearance on a Barstool Sports golf podcast last week.

“Boston is unbelievable,” Griffin said. “Living in Boston, playing in Boston was, like, one of the best experiences. Dude, the fans are incredible. Having a team that is so championship-focused. One of the best parts is the players on that team are just like such a great group of guys.”

The Celtics have held a number of free agent workouts in recent weeks including forwards TJ Warren, Lamar Stevens and Louis King. However, with the injury history of Porzingis and Robert Williams, it would not be a surprise to see the team add a little more depth to the frontcourt. Based on how Stevens spoke about him Tuesday, Griffin sounds like a strong candidate for one of the team’s final spots.
