Boston University Bridge closed Sunday afternoon from fire at homeless encampment

The Boston University Bridge was closed Sunday afternoon because of a fire that broke out at a homeless encampment on the Cambridge side, according to Massachusetts State Police on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The Cambridge Fire Department said on X that the fire in encampment under the BU Bridge started around 12:45 p.m. There were no residents present at the time of the fire and propane tanks were involved in the blaze, the department added.

Videos posted to X showed a large pillar of dark smoke billowing from under the bridge. The smoke was seen from atop the Prudential Center in Back Bay.

State Troopers, Cambridge firefighters, Cambridge police, Boston police and Boston University police all responded, State Police said. The fire was put out around 2:30 p.m., according to Massachusetts State Police.

No injuries were reported and all 10 residents were safe and were being helped by the Red Cross, Cambridge firefighters said. The fire remains under investigation and the bridge has since reopened.
