Members of the Boston Police Department were the highest-paid city employees in 2024, with seven officers who earned over half a million dollars — bolstered by millions of dollars in overtime pay.
Total payroll for Boston Police was $577.98 million last year, according to city data. This included $279.62 million in base pay, $103.22 million in overtime pay, $20.55 million in injury pay and $13.67 million in other pay.
Boston Police officers took nine of the city’s overall top 10 earners’ spots for 2024, with Police Lt. Stanley Demesmin as the highest-paid employee within the department and across the city.
Demesmin took home $575,583.11 last year, with $161,306.48 in base pay, $223,773.96 in overtime pay and $190,502.67 in other pay, such as detail and injury.
Lt. Sean Smith was behind Demesmin at a $558,224.86 salary, including $155,265.97 in base pay, $148,505.22 in overtime pay and $254,453.67 in his other pay.
Capt. Timothy Connolly was the third-highest earner at $550,760.10. This included $178,073.23 in base pay, $193,677.07 in overtime pay and $179,009.80 in his other pay.
Capt. John Danilecki was in fourth with a $544,519.83 salary, including $177,743.21 in base pay, $136,562.06 in overtime pay and $230,214.56 in his other pay.
And just behind Danilecki was Capt. Michael Hegarty who earned $542,153.06, including $178,776.43 in base pay, $79,915.58 in overtime pay and $283,461.05 in his other pay.
