NEW YORK — Red Sox rookie Marcelo Mayer crushed his first major league home run Friday here at Yankee Stadium.
He connected on a 93.9 mph four-seam fastball that Yankees rookie starter Will Warren left right down the middle of the plate in the fifth inning. Mayer drove it 410 feet to right-center field. The solo shot left his bat with a 103.3 mph exit velocity.

Mayer’s home run is the lone positive for Boston so far in this game. The Sox trail 8-2 in the sixth inning. The Yankees pounded starter Walker Buehler for seven runs (five earned), seven hits, two homers and two walks in the first two innings.
Baseball America ranks the 22-year-old Mayer No. 8 on its Top 100 list. He has gone 7-for-34 (.206) with a homer, two doubles, two RBIs, four runs, three walks and 10 strikeouts since Boston promoted him May 24.
He was the fourth overall pick in the 2021 Draft, becoming Boston’s highest draft selection since 1967 when it picked Mike Garman third overall.
