BOSTON — The Red Sox have shut down right-handed reliever Liam Hendriks from throwing, and he’s not expected to pitch again this season.
“He had a setback a few weeks ago,” manager Alex Cora said before the Red Sox’ game against the Yankees on Saturday. “Kind of like got tight on the forearm. So they shut him down.”
Only 14 games remain in the regular season, and the 36-year-old Hendriks has not pitched since May 27.
“I don’t know if he’s done-done for the year but it doesn’t look like he’s going to be able to be a part of it,” Cora said.
Hendriks landed on the 15-day injured list May 30 due to right hip inflammation. Boston transferred him to the 60-day IL on July 8.
He did not pitch at all last year and began 2025 on the IL with right elbow inflammation. He posted a 6.59 ERA and 1.39 WHIP in 14 outings (13 ⅔ innings) this season. He’ll be a free agent this coming offseason.
Hendriks also battled stage 4 non-Hodgkin lymphoma late in 2022 and returned to pitch five innings in 2023 before suffering a torn UCL.
