BOSTON — Red Sox right fielder Wilyer Abreu’s IL stint is expected to be brief.
Abreu (left oblique strain) took swings here at Fenway Park on Friday.
Manager Alex Cora believes the 25-year-old left-handed hitter could return from the 10-day injured list next week when the Red Sox play in San Francisco vs. the Giants (June 20-22).
“He feels good,” Cora said before a game against the Yankees.
Boston placed Abreu on the IL Monday and promoted top Roman Anthony from Triple-A Worcester. Next Thursday (an off day before a series in San Francisco) is the first day he is eligible to return.
It should be interesting to see what the Red Sox choose to do with their roster when Abreu is activated. They will have four starting outfielders in Abreu, Anthony, Jarren Duran and Ceddanne Rafaela.
Rafaela could move to the infield.
Abreu is batting .245 batting average with a .321 on-base percentage, .471 slugging percentage and .792, 13 home runs, eight doubles, 32 RBIs, 28 runs, 24 walks and 54 strikeouts in 64 games (234 plate appearances).
