BOSTON — Nate Eaton, who the Red Sox recalled from Triple-A Worcester earlier Monday, is batting leadoff against the Orioles.
Boston and Baltimore will play the first game of a two-game series at Fenway Park at 7:10 p.m.
Eaton, a right-handed hitter, will serve as the DH. He is leading off with left-handed starter Trevor Rogers (5-2, 1.43 ERA) on the mound for the Orioles. Eaton has led off four other times for Boston this season vs. southpaw starting pitchers.
Boston placed Rob Refsnyder, who typically serves as DH vs. lefties, on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain on Monday.
“The last few days he hasn’t felt great,” manager Alex Cora said. “So I think it makes sense to put him on the IL, get him back hopefully by next week.”
Newly-signed first baseman Nathaniel Lowe, a left-handed hitter, is not in the lineup. He’s expected to start vs. right-handed starters and “certain lefties,” Cora said.
Abraham Toro will play first base and bat ninth. Lefty masher Romy Gonzalez is in the cleanup spot and playing second base.
Wilyer Abreu is not in the lineup after exiting Sunday’s game with a tight calf.
“Willy’s sore, tight,” Cora said Monday. “We’ll take it day by day. A lot of improvement from last night. So we feel positive on that one. We’ll see what happens. That doesn’t mean that he (avoids) the IL but we’ll patient and see how it goes.”
Rogers began the season on the 15-day IL with a right knee subluxation. He made his season debut May 24 against Boston at Fenway and pitched 6 ⅓ scoreless innings.
