The Red Sox have two major award finalists for the 2025 season.
Ace Garrett Crochet was named one of three AL Cy Young finalists and 21-year-old outfielder Roman Anthony was voted one of three AL Rookie of the Year finalists.
Detroit’s Tarik Skubal and Houston’s Hunter Brown were the other two AL Cy Young finalists. Nick Kurtz and Jacob Wilson, both of the Athletics, were the other finalists for AL Rookie of the Year.
The 26-year-old Crochet enjoyed a dominant first season with the Red Sox after being acquired from the White Sox at the 2024 Winter Meetings. He went 18-5 with a 2.59 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 255 strikeouts and 46 walks in 32 starts (205 ⅓ innings). He led the American League in innings and strikeouts.
He finished in the 99th percentile among major league pitchers in both pitching run value (34) and breaking ball run value (15). He finished in the 95th percentile in fastball run value (17), 93rd percentile in strikeout percentage (31.3%), and 90th percentile in both expected ERA (2.93) and chase percentage (32.7%).
Crochet will be Boston’s ace for many years to come after he signed a six-year, $170-million contract extension in March.
Anthony also will be one of Boston’s leaders long-term after signing an eight-year, $130 million extension in August.
He batted .292 with a .396 on-base percentage, .463 slugging percentage, .859 OPS, eight home runs, 18 doubles, one triple, 32 RBIs and 48 runs in 71 games (303 plate appearances).
The Red Sox promoted Anthony, then Baseball America’s No. 1 overall prospect, on June 9. The left-handed hitter quickly became an everyday player, starting against both right-handed and left-handed starters. He made 27 starts in the leadoff spot, 13 starts batting second, 21 starts in the three hole, one start at cleanup and four starts in the No. 5 spot.
He started 32 games in right field, 17 games in left field and 17 games at DH. He finished with seven defensive runs saved in 442 ⅓ innings in the outfield.
