Boston Celtics two-way forward getting valuable Summer League experience

LAS VEGAS — Even before the Celtics officially opened Summer League practices, the team’s young guys went to the Auerbach Center to get their workouts in. Some of the main NBA guys were there, too, but the younger guys have also been working on their games throughout the offseason.

That includes a relatively new face in Miles Norris. The two-way forward joined the Celtics midway through last season after getting signed to a vacant roster slot. Now, he’s looking to stick with the Celtics as he plays through his third Summer League.

“For the most part, I’ve been in Boston, working out with the coaches,” Norris said. “The younger guys have been there — Jordan (Walsh), Baylor (Scheierman). So we’ve been working out every day. Other than maybe Sunday or something. We’ve been going hard. I enjoy being out there in Boston, working with the coaches. I feel like that’s the best places for me to be this summer just to get ready for the season.”

Norris, 25, has come off the bench for the Celtics during Summer League, playing in three out of their four games thus far. He scored 11 points on 5-for-11 shooting in the Thursday win over the Lakers. While he shot 1-for-6 from deep, he converted his looks inside the arc as he flashed his athleticism

While Norris hasn’t been able to show it in Summer League thus far, he’s been a consistent 3-point shooter playing in the G League. He knocked down 39.5% of his 3s in 22 games with the Maine Celtics last season. Considering he’s also a lengthy 6-foot-7, there’s a reason why the C’s brought him into the organization last season. For context, Miles has shot 4-for-17 (23.5%) on 3s in Summer League so far despite some open looks.

The Celtics went through major roster changes as bringing in multiple new faces this offseason. Rookies Amari Williams and Max Shulga will likely be signed to two-way contracts, as well, though that’s not official yet. Regardless, Norris has continued to get a chance to keep working on his game in Las Vegas.

“Pretty acclimated,” Norris said. “Going into my third year, I’ve learned a lot my first and second years. Since I’ve been in Boston, I’ve tried to take things away from the vets. We have a lot of good veterans on that team. So I feel like once I got on that team, I took a big step. I try to watch how they prepare, watch how they come into the gym every day. They’ve been setting the groundwork for us young guys.”
