While Torrey Craig didn’t play much throughout the playoffs as the Celtics saw their season come to an abrupt end, the longtime veteran still gushed about his time with the team. Craig said it was an amazing experience being a part of the Celtics as he pointed out the “winning culture” in Boston.
Craig, 34, is set to be a free agent this summer after spending the past few months with the Celtics. The future is uncertain for not just Craig but also for the Celtics, but the wing spoke about potentially re-signing with Boston.
“I guess we’ll cross that path when we get there,“ Craig told MassLive after the C’s lost to the Knicks in Game 6. ”I have to sit down with my representatives, my agents and talk things through and see the options. But I wouldn’t mind re-signing here.”
Craig started the season with the Bulls, though he only played in nine games due to an ankle injury that kept him for weeks. Once the Bulls waived him, that allowed Craig to latch onto a contender as one of top available wings on the buyout market. Since the Celtics were looking for depth at that position, the signing felt natural.
The Celtics officially announced Craig’s signing on Feb. 8 for the rest of the season. Craig played in 17 games (three starts) for the Celtics afterwards, averaging 2.7 points and 2.8 rebounds per game. He also played in five playoff games. The eighth-year veteran seemingly slid right into the locker room as his antics on the bench were noticeable from Day 1.
“Just the togetherness,” Craig said. “Everybody in the locker room is for one another, all the way down to the front office, the coaching staff. Family-oriented. Yeah, it’s just a wholesome place to be around.”
Craig brought size at 6-foot-5 at the wing position, plus he’s been a capable 3-point shooter in recent seasons. That didn’t quite manifest itself with the Celtics as he shot 29% from deep, though it was on a small sample size of 31 3-pointers. Regardless of what the future holds, Craig only had complimentary things to say about his time in Boston.
“Everybody was super helpful when it comes to anything,” Craig said. “Looking for houses, looking for places to live. They made the whole transition smooth. Welcomed my family, my son. He was able to experience some things. And then just the coaching staff. The PT guys, they were working with me every day. From top to bottom, it’s one of the top organizations in the league, for sure.”
